root canal treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is the process of removing the infected dental pulp, which consists of blood vessels and nerves, from the root canals of the teeth, followed by disinfecting the space and sealing it with tissue-friendly materials. Root canal treatment is generally necessary in cases of toothache, decay, fracture, infection, or trauma. The treatment aims to alleviate pain and treat infection. Additionally, it prevents the extraction of the natural tooth and the need for prosthetic replacement, thereby restoring the natural tooth function and aesthetics. When performed properly, root canal treatment provides long-term success and preserves the health of the natural tooth.

How is it done?

All decay is removed, and the cavity is enlarged. The diseased blood vessels and nerves, called the pulp, are removed. The cleaned canals are then filled with an appropriate filling material. Finally, aesthetic filling of the tooth is done, restoring the natural tooth to its former health.

Can there be pain after root canal treatment?

It is normal to have mild toothaches after root canal treatment. It is an expected part of the treatment process. The goal of the treatment is to eliminate the condition causing pain in the mouth. However, following the removal of the nerve structure in the tooth, mild to moderate pain may occur in the surrounding tissues due to the healing process. This pain is usually experienced as sensitivity to touch on the affected tooth and typically decreases and disappears within approximately one week. Pain after root canal treatment will gradually decrease and disappear over time. If the patient does not maintain proper oral hygiene and stays in touch with the dentist for periodic check-ups, pain may recur after root canal treatment, and the teeth may not accept this treatment again.
