What is Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that aims to improve the aesthetics and functionality of teeth and jaws, thereby contributing to enhancing the individual’s quality of life. Untreated orthodontic problems worsen over time. As time passes, decay and gum diseases resulting from inadequate cleaning of teeth due to misalignment can lead to tooth loss. Additionally, malocclusions can lead to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and speaking, and damage to supporting bone and gum tissues.
Orthodontics is a science that not only improves the health of your teeth but also improves and enhances your smile. Since each individual’s malocclusions and expectations from treatment may differ, your orthodontist will recommend the best treatment method for you after carefully analyzing your orthodontic problem.
Orthodontic treatment generally consists of the following steps:
- Initial Assessment: First, an orthodontist or dentist evaluates the patient’s oral structure, the condition of the teeth, and jaw relationships. If necessary, a detailed examination is conducted using X-rays and other imaging techniques.
- Treatment Planning: Based on the evaluation, a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs and treatment goals is developed. The treatment plan includes which appliances or devices will be used, the duration of treatment, and other important details.
- Treatment Initiation: At the beginning of treatment, teeth cleaning and preparation may be required. The placement of appropriate appliances, such as fixed braces or clear aligners, also occurs at this stage.
- Regular Check-ups and Adjustments: Throughout the treatment, patients regularly visit their orthodontists for check-ups. At these appointments, adjustments to the appliances are made, and the progress of the treatment is evaluated. Procedures such as changing braces or wires, renewing aligners, may occur during this process.
- Monitoring the Treatment Process: Throughout the treatment, the movement of teeth and jaw relationships are regularly monitored. If necessary, changes to the treatment plan may be made.
- Completion of Treatment: When teeth have moved to the desired positions and treatment goals have been successfully achieved, orthodontic appliances are removed, and final touches are made to the stabilized teeth.
- Stabilization Period: Following the completion of treatment, a stabilization period is undergone to stabilize the new positions of the teeth. Retainers (fixed or removable stabilizers) are typically used during this period.
- Regular Check-ups and Follow-up: It is important to attend regular check-up appointments even after completing treatment. During these check-ups, the health of the teeth and the stabilized positions are monitored.
The orthodontic treatment process may vary for each patient, and the completion of treatment typically ranges from several months to several years. The treatment process and steps vary depending on the individual needs and treatment plan.
